3rd Grade Traditions

August

  • Summer Olympics (if correct year) - Students study the history of the Olympics, the Sports in each, the host country.

September

  • Mealworms - Students observe complete metamorphosis of mealworms, and record observations in a Science Journal (4-6 weeks).
  • Bible Overview - Students learn that Jesus is the promised Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. They also learn the Books of the Bible in order.
  • Who Am I - For Open House, the students create a Microsoft powerpoint slide where the parents have to find their childs work by the information and clip art only.

October/November

  • Space Center of Houston Field Trip - At Space Center Houston, third graders watch the film, "To Be an Astronaut". They visit Blast Off Theatre where they experience the thrill of launching into space like a real Astronaut. In addition, students participate in a scavenger hunt to locate specific items in each section of Space Center Houston.
  • Presidential Election (of Election Year) - Students study the election process, research past presidents, and hold the school-wide (for Lower School ) Presidential Election .
  • Planet Study - Students research and write a report on a planet. They will then illustrate or model their planet and present in class.

January / February

  • Heritage Homes Field Trip - Students study communities in social studies at Sam Houston Park . The Heritage Homes represent the different time periods and cultures that settled here in Houston , featuring a church and authentic homes from various Houston areas that have been moved to the park.
  • Interactive Theatre - Students attend a production where actors pull students from the audience to participate in the play.

February / March

  • Winter Olympics (if correct year) - Students study the history of the Olympics, the Sports in each, and the host country.
  • Rodeo - During the time of the Rodeo in Houston, students study the life of a Cowboy, Rodeos, and Texas history.

April / May

  • Washington D.C. - Students study how our nation's capital came to be, the monuments, places of interest, and write group reports.
  • Little House in the Big Woods - Students read the book in class, "build" a log cabin, and study life during that time.
  • Interactive Play - Students attend a production where actors pull students from the audience to participate in the play.
  • Endangered Animal - Students research and write a report on an endangered animal.

Year-Round

  • Novel Studies - Conduct four novel studies during the year.
