2nd Grade Traditions

Year-Round

  • Token Store - Students are given the opportunity to earn tokens based on their behavior in class, learning that actions can result in rewards or consequences. Each child is expected to keep up with his or her tokens througout the year. They are allowed to shop weekly for a reward, which are weighted in value. The children must decide whether to spend each week for a smaller prize or save their tokens for a larger prize.

August - September

  • Ant Farm - Through the study of habitats in science each class creates, monitors, and maintains an ant farm. Students document the changes they witness, which are made by the ants, in their science notebooks.
  • Moses and the Ten Commandments - Students learn how God lead the lives of the Israelites and Moses while in Egypt and through the desert. They also learn the Ten Commandments through songs and rhymes and how the Ten Commandments apply to our lives today.

October - November

  • Dinosaur Science Unit - Students explore the world of dinosaurs through the scientific method. The determination of size, shape, eating habits, and more are discussed along with comparing imprints and fossils. This unit culminates in a trip to the Houston Natural Science Museum to see their exhibit.
  • Thanksgiving Unit - Students study how and why the Pilgrims came to America, and what life was like for them in a new land.
  • Journey to the Promise Land - Bible study
  • Home Reader Projects - Mobile and paper bag character

December - January

  • Jesus Birth - Bible Study
  • Home Reader Projects- Mini books and book jacket.

February - March

  • Light and Color - Experimenting with prisms and light in Science.
  • Witnessing - The study of Jesus' life and how to share the gospel.
  • Home Reader Projects - Diorama and "Flip" book.]

April - May

  • Texas Unit - Students explore many interesting facts about our state. Learning about the early days, people and places, the study ends with our favorite field trip to the Battleship of Texas and the San Jacinto Monument and Museum.
  • Easter - Bible study and making "Benjamin's Box"
  • Home Reader Projects- Sandwich boards
