1st Grade Traditions

September

  • Johnny Appleseed Day - After learning about Johnny Appleseed, students bring apples to make applesauce.

October

  • Field Trip to Houston Zoo and Picnic - Students study Animal Unit in Science then take a trip to the Zoo where they participate in a scavenger hunt to observe the animals. The unit follows the Bible lesson on Noah and the Ark.
  • Habitat Project - Students make a project of an animal in natural habitat.
  • Fire Safety - Students learn fire safety rules and receive a special visit by a fireman.

November

  • Thanksgiving Feast - After learning about Pilgrims, the First Grade Classes have a "Feast" together.
  • Being Thankful - Using a word processing application the students type a Bible verse or poem and illustrate it with clip art.

December

  • Christmas Customs Around the World - Students make projects after learning about various countries' Christmas celebrations.
  • Birthday Party for Jesus - We celebrate what Christmas is truly about.
  • Jesus is Born - Using a word processing application the students type a Bible verse or poem and illustrate it by using the drawing tool bar.

January

  • 100 Day - Students collect 100 items together and participate in 100-Day themed activities. Students make a snack called "Derdnuh." (Hundred spelled backwards)

February

  • Robot Day - After reading about robots, students make a robot to share with class.

Music

  • First grade begins learning to read music. They present a musical with a nature theme each Spring.

March

  • Easter - Students learn about the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Students make their own personal resurrection eggs to tell the story to others.
  • Christ is Risen - Using a word processing application the students type a Bible verse or poem and illustrate it by using the drawing tool bar.

April

  • Bear Day - After reading bear stories, students bring their bear to school for a bear sleep-over. The next day, students participate in fun bear activities and have a teddy bear picnic.

May

  • Field Trip to the Interactive Theater - Students read, study and attend a play. (Based on Classic Children's Literature)
  • Math Sundaes - As the students memorize their addition facts to nine they earn an ice cream sundae.
