WELCOME MELISSA WEBER

Hello FBA Family!

First, I want to thank Katrina Lee for her OUTSTANDING role as our First Friends President. She truly has a servants heart and it has shone in all that she has done this year at FBA.

As for next year, I am extremely blessed to be able to serve our school in this position. Allow me a moment to introduce my family. This year will be our 6th year at FBA and we have attended Houston's First since 2008. I have an extremely supportive husband, Jeffery and together we have three boys, Jackson (will be in 3rd grade), Hunter (will be in 2nd grade), and Dekes (will be in Kindergarten).  These three boys (and ourselves) truly LOVE it here at FBA. They have had amazing faculty leading them and such sweet friends. We feel so blessed.

The 2016-2017 year promises to be another fantastic year at FBA. Our First Friends Board is stacked with a stellar team to lead the way. These ladies have all served FBA in many capacities over the years and have graciously signed on with me to head up First Friends next year.

Outgoing President – Katrina Lee

Secretary - Courtney Edmiston

Treasurer – Misty Clark

Chaplain - Shannon Bloodworth

Needless to say, I can't wait to serve our families, faculty and staff with these rock stars!

All events from last year will be returning so there will be plenty of opportunities for our First Friend's families to volunteer. Please do not hesitate to be in touch if there is a special area you would like to participate and I thank everyone in advance for their time and efforts in making our school such a wonderful place!

Humbly Serving,

Melissa Weber

MINISTERING TO OTHERS

Moms in Prayer- Our Moms in Prayer group is part of a worldwide interdenominational Christ-centered prayer ministry, www.momsinprayer.org.  Lamentations 2:19 says, "Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to Him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street." Prayer brings God's power into our lives, and it is with this conviction that the moms in prayer group gather with purpose to:

Pray for our children, teachers, staff and school

Pray that our schools will be directed by biblical values and high moral standards

Provide hope and strength to moms who carry a heavy burden for their children

We will be meeting Tuesdays after morning drop-off in The Garden Room, right outside the church's cafe.  You don't have to be there every week.  Whenever you can make it, come be a prayer warrior for our FBA warriors!

Look for the Moms in Prayer mailbox in the front office of the school, next to the entrance to the Library!  This locked box will offer the parents and staff at FBA a safe and confidential opportunity to submit prayer requests.  You can include your name or remain anonymous.  It will be an honor to lift your needs up to the Father.

Benevolence- First Friends wants to reach out to FBA families in their times of need.  Please let us know of any needs within our FBA community.

FUNDRAISERS

Used Uniform Sales- These sales typically take place on the First Thursday of the month in the Fitness and Recreation Center lobby (the gym area).  The sales will alternate each month between a morning sale, 7:30-9:00 and an afternoon sale, 2:30-4:00. Has your child outgrown his/her uniform but you don’t want to pay Parker prices? This is an opportunity for families to save a good bit of money by purchasing used uniforms that have been donated to First Friends. It is also a fundraiser for First Friends. The money made at these sales helps fund events throughout the year. If you have uniforms that your child has outgrown, please consider donating them to First Friends. The donation baskets are located at the back of the library near Mr. Cherry’s office and in the Primary school behind Tina Searcy’s desk. Please make sure the uniforms are in excellent condition and are cleaned prior to donating.  Our volunteers shouldn't have to wash or mend the clothes. Volunteers needed to sort through and organize uniforms before the sale and to help customers on the day of the sale.

Butter Braids- Our FBA families love these yummy pastries that you can feed to your company over the holidays. Pull your butter braid out of the freezer on Christmas Eve, let it rise overnight, and bake it the next morning. They are easy to prepare and delicious to eat! Order forms will go home in October. Volunteers needed to distribute orders on delivery day.

Box Tops and Labels for Education- First Friends accepts your Box Tops and Labels for Education donations throughout the school year. We will run various competitions to encourage families to clip those Box Tops and Labels for Education from your cereal boxes and other household products. By collecting and turning in these Box Tops and Labels, First Friends gets money for FBA. This year we will be having competitions between the Blue and Silver teams!  Volunteers needed to count box tops and to help with the competitions.

School Supplies- In the spring, First Friends offers FBA families the opportunity to order their school supplies from us and avoid the hassle of finding the items on your own. You will probably save money on your supplies while also raising money for First Friends’ events and activities.

Locker Shelves- Students new to middle school will need a locker shelf. Finding a locker shelf that is sturdy can be a challenge. Let us make it simple for you. Buy your locker shelf from First Friends. Order forms go home in the Spring.

Directory- First Friends distributes directories to all of our FBA families. Thanks to our generous advertisers, there is no charge to our families!  Volunteers needed to contact potential advertisers and compile the directory content. Planning begins in February.

Spring Fundraiser- The spring fundraiser changes each year. Stay tuned!

SPECIAL EVENTS

Open House- Open House is a fabulous opportunity for you to visit your child's classroom and see what wonderful learning is happening in the room. Many teachers even arrange scavenger hunts for the parents that contain the completed projects from the first weeks of school! First Friends plans to provide ice cream treats from Snowdog Ice Cream truck again that evening, encouraging some FBA fellowship!

Movie Nights- Family FBA movie nights have been a huge success!  Dinner, mini-movies and a Featured Presentation on a SUPER large blow-up screen make for a great night for our FBA families. Stay tuned for dates!

Mother/Son Warrior Games- Let's not let the fathers and daughters have all the fun at their ball.  Come out for our Mother/Son obstacle course event.  This event was so fun last year in its initial year, we are going to continue it this year!

Book Fair- Come visit for a great opportunity to buy some books for your kids and help build the FBA library at the same time. There will also be a Family Night with games, pizza and a whole lot more! Volunteers needed to work the cash registers, help kids find what they want and help with family night. Volunteer signups will be posted online.

Grandparents'/Special Friends' Day- There are all sorts of fun activities that the teachers and the FBA staff have planned for that special time. Volunteers needed to help set up and take down the event.

Father/Daughter Sweetheart Ball- The evening will include dinner and a portrait, along with a chance for dads to show their daughters how to be treated like a lady...all while having fun!

Buckaroo Breakfast- Buckaroo Breakfast will be held before school. The entire family is invited! Dress in your western wear and join us for some breakfast tacos and other treats. This event takes place on Go Texan day when the trail riders arrive in Memorial Park and FBA is let out at noon. Yee haw!! Volunteers needed to help set up and clean up.

HELP THE STAFF

Teacher Appreciation- Every month, First Friends will be doing something special for the staff. Each grade will be asked to participate at some point during the year. When it is your month, your grade level will be sent an email from Sign-Up Genius asking you to send food items for a teacher appreciation luncheon, breakfast, or sweet treat feast. During the busiest times of the year, we will do catered lunches so that we don’t put stress on our FBA families.

Gift Cards - First Friends would like to give out door prizes at our monthly Teacher Appreciation events. If you are interested in donating a gift card for this purpose, then we have listed below some of the items that are particularly appealing to teachers. Additionally, we will be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week during April! You can drop off your gift cards at the front desk with Carol Rodgers. There will be an envelope designated for the gift cards. Thanks, in advance, for your support! Questions can be directed to amy@davidratliff.com.

Library Volunteers- Mrs. Markeloff always needs help in the library. Volunteers are needed to read to classes, to check-out books, to check-in books, and to shelve books!

Room & Grade Level Parents- This year, room parents and grade captains will be identified through a random selection process, which will take place Friday, August 26. If you are interested in being a room parent or grade level captain, contact your homeroom teacher (PS & LS) or Karen.Willingham@hfba.org (MS).

In the Primary School and Lower School, room parents help with classroom parties during the year, which vary by grade level, but usually include Christmas, Valentine's Day and End of the Year. Room parents are also responsible for organizing voluntary collections for teacher gifts- for birthdays, Christmas and End of the Year. Giving money to these collections is completely voluntary, but our room parents organize these collections, so that those who want to contribute will have the opportunity to do so. Room Parents and Grade Level Captain may also be asked to help with field trips and other special grade-level activities.

Friends of Fine Arts- Sign up today to help Mrs. Toups post our children’s beautiful artwork all over the school. We also love to see our children perform in those wonderful musical performances that Miss Willingham organizes. Sign up to serve lemonade and cookies to the kids as they wait to perform. They need lots of parental support to make their yearly production fabulous! First Friends helps the FBA fine arts department in many ways and we would love to have your help.
