TAKE A SEAT: NEW HARKNESS TABLE A STRATEGIC INSTRUCTIONAL TOOL

August 9, 2011

What may appear simply as a new conference table is actually a tool to engage students and provide an enriching learning experience.

Called a Harkness Table, this new addition to the FBA Library will be used by faculty to create settings where students look beyond facts, dates, and statistics, actively engage in critical thinking, and learn how to persuasively articulate what they know and believe. And, with students increasingly communicating by text messages, Facebook, Twitter, and similar methods, the Harkness Table provides a forum where they can develop their face-to-face communication skills, as well.

The Harkness Table began at the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy in the 1930s. Now, all FBA teachers will be trained in the Harkness method and will implement these strategies with their students. Visit the Harkness Table website to learn about the benefits and history of this valuable new resource.

FIRST BAPTIST ACADEMY RECEIVES ACCREDITATION FROM THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION OF THE SOUTHWEST (ISAS)

June 22, 2011

First Baptist Academy has been accepted into the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS), joining a distinguished list of other private schools in the greater Houston area.

ISAS promotes the highest professional and ethical standards of educational excellence for independent schools in the region and recognizes by formal ongoing accreditation those schools which demonstrate adherence to its standards. As a collective voice of the independent schools of the southwest, ISAS fosters collegial relations among its member schools and represents their interests.

In welcoming FBA as a member, ISAS congratulated the school community on the achievement, calling it "the product of extensive and exemplary collaborative work. The school is clearly committed to meeting the highest educational standards and to ongoing school improvement. ISAS is privileged to join in this spirit of aspiration in the hope and belief that the students of First Baptist Academy will be the beneficiaries."
